Asia’s first research reactor Apsara-U becomes operational

Apsara upgraded verison has become operational in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre

  • Apsara-U, the upgraded version of Asia’s first research reactor “Apsara” has become operational at the Trombay campus of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Maharashtra.
  • Since August 1956, the Apsara provided dedicated service to the researchers till its shutting down in 2009.
  • The modern avatar of has used indigenously built dispersion fuel elements made of Low Enriched Uranium (LEU).
  • It has higher neutron flux that will boost the production of radio-isotopes for medical application by 50%.
  • It will be used for research in nuclear physics, material science and radiation shielding.
