Today’s topic is Element Series. Generally this topic comes in the competitive exams with the weightage of 5 marks.

Let’s start discussing the topic with meaning of Element Series.

Element Series is the series of different elements i.e. it can be letters, numbers or different symbols.

In the element series questions, we have to find the positions of the elements from the either ends of the series. Or in simple language, we have to count the position of the element based on the conditions given in the questions.

Before discussing the different type of questions asked from Element Series. I would like to discuss some common words used in the questions mentioning the positions of the elements.

Here is the example explaining the above mentioned words:

**Example:**

**XYZ**

As you can see there are three elements in the series. Now, let’s see how we can mention the position of the elements in different ways:

- X precedes Y → X comes first
- Y precedes Z → Y comes before Z
- Y follows X → Y comes after X
- Z follows Y → Z comes after Y
- Y is preceded by X
- Z is preceded by Y
- X is followed by Y
- Y is followed by Z

So, Precedes → Before something; &

Follows → After something

As mentioned above, we have to count the positions of the elements; it is advisable to count the elements in groups of 3-4 elements rather than counting each element to reduce the time of counting.

Now, let’s start discussing the topic with the help of example, containing different type of questions.

**Study the following arrangement carefully and answer the questions given below:**

1)Four of the following five are alike in a certain way based on their positions in the above arrangement and so form a group. Which is the one that does not belong to that group?

a) TER

b) U4@

c) 6DV

d) J1K

e) Nβ*

**SOLUTION – **The correct answer is **d) J1K**

In these types of question, we have to check the positions of the elements of different options. Let’s check the positions from a) to e) from the given series and find the odd one.

So the pattern is +2 in the forward direction and -2 in the backward direction.

2) How many such numbers are there in the above arrangement each of which is immediately preceded by a letter but not immediately followed by a letter?

a) None

b) One

c) Two

d) Three

e) More than three

**SOLUTION– **The correct answer is** e) More than three**

According to the above conditions, we have to find :

3) What should come in the place of question mark (?) in the following series based on the above arrangement?

a) 8*H

b) 8HN

c) 8H7

d) D*H

e) None of these

**SOLUTION – **The correct answer is **b) 8HN**

4) How many such symbols are there in the above arrangement, each of which is immediately preceded by a number and immediately followed by a letter?

- a) None
- b) One
- c) Two
- d) Three
- e) More than three

**SOLUTION – **The correct answer is **d) Three**

5) Which of the following is seventh to the left of the twentieth from the left end of the above arrangement?

a) V

b) @

c) β

d) ©

e) None of these

**SOLUTION –** The correct answer is **e) None of these**

- There is the trick to solve such type of questions. We don’t have to count each element to get the answer. Below is the table showing that how to add or deduct the numbers to get the asked position of the element.

- Like poles repels each other (-)
- Unlike poles attract each other (+)

__Check these conditions by applying on the above example:__

** Condition –** Seventh to the left of the twentieth from the left end.

Left and Left = –

So, 20-7 = 13^{th} element which is F

6) If the above given series is reversed, which element will be the 5^{th} to the right of the 12^{th} element from the left end?

a) V

b) F

c) U

d) @

e) None of these

**SOLUTION –** The correct answer is **b) F**

** Condition – **5

^{th}to the right of the 12

^{th}element from the left end

Right and Left = +

So, 17^{th} element from left. But as series is reversed, its answer will also be reversed.

17^{th} element from right end = F

7) If all the numbers are dropped from the above series, which element will be the 6^{th} from the left of 15^{th} from the left end?

a) $

b) @

c) Cannot be determined

d) K

e) None of these

**SOLUTION –** The correct answer is **d) K**

Condition – 6^{th} from the left of 15^{th} from the left end (dropping numbers)

Left and Left = –

So, 9^{th} element from left end (dropping numbers) = K

8) In the above series, which element is 10^{th} to the left of the 5^{th} to the left of *?

a) #

b) R

c) A

d) 3

e) None of these

**SOLUTION –** The correct answer is **a) #**
